Sturgeon Heights Relay For Life

On May 20th, 2010 Sturgeon Heights School will be holding a Relay For Life in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Students will have the opportunity to form teams and raise money through a constant relay. Festivities will begin at 2:15 and will continue until 10pm. Students are bringing home permission forms and T-shirt order forms this week. If your child wishes to participate we require parent permission.

Looking for a Canadian Hero? How about Laura Secord...

Recently, grade 7 students were asked to complete biographies on a hero if the War of 1812. Students were asked to consider what it might have been like to be involved in this pivotal battle and were to ask their historical figure three questions.

The movie below is an excellent example of impeccable research and a fantastic portrayal of multiple perspectives. Another case of outstanding projects from the grade 7 Social Studies class!

Let the Games Begin!

Today was the start of the Sturgeon Heights Olympiad. Mrs. Holmes put together a great opening video with students participating in a torch relay. We even had a special guest. Jim Hole carried in the torch he used as part of the official 2010 Winter Olympics Torch Relay. He spoke to the students about what it was like to be a participant in the relay and officially opened our Olympiad games. Part of the opening included a special video hello from Brendan Green, a member of Canada's Biathlon relay team in Vancouver. The students were pumped up and are ready to have a fun week. Thanks Mrs. Holmes for all your efforts.

Great things in Junior High Physical Education...

To fulfill the social dance portion of the Physical Education curriculum, grade 8 and 9 students choreographed and performed line dances before a live audience just prior to the Christmas break.

The Battle on the Plains of Abraham Revisited

Recently, grade 7 Social Studies students were asked to put a 'fresh perspective' on a pivotal event in Canadian History. Grade 7 students created representations and recreations of the Battle on the Plains of Abraham and the results of this battle. Students were to include the perspectives of the British, French and First Nations peoples involved.

Be the Change You Wish to See in the World

Recently, students in junior high Health classes completed music videos on the theme "Be the Change You Wish to See in the World." Music videos were to exemplify citizenship and anti-bullying practices in our school.

Grade 6: Making Mathematical Music!

The SixOhm class has been busy studying Measurement concepts in Math class! Recently, the students wrapped up their study of two concepts: Perimeter and Area. Students solved a variety of problems and were encouraged to demonstrate their own understanding by creating original formulas for these concepts. To take it one step further, students were asked to put their learning to the test; they had to design and record a music video that incorporated original lyrics detailing Perimeter and Area.

Today, the students began sharing their videos with classmates and teachers. The video premieres were wildly successful and students look forward to seeing the remaining videos in the upcoming days.

Olympic Torch Relay 2010

The students at Sturgeon Heights are gearing up for the Vancouver Olympics in February. Bulletin boards, crafts, phys ed activities and the library are all taking on an Olympics look!

"Paint the Town Red" day was on Wednesday, January 13th. Students and staff were encouraged to wear red, Canada, or Olympic wear to school if they had it. There was lots of participation for this theme!

Mrs. Holmes' classroom was busy making a banner to take to the Olympic Torch Run. They were "Painting the Banner Red"! Mrs. Holmes took the banner to St. Anne Street in St. Albert and those students that could met up with her and proudly held the sign as the Torch bearer ran by. The students were excited to see the torch at such close range.

Abducted

It was an exciting afternoon and a little scary. Someone at Sturgeon Heights School kidnapped me and locked me in a closet for part of the afternoon. Luckily, groups of students had already been organized to follow the clues and find me. The students are very clever and it did not take long to locate me. It is a good thing too because I had not had any coffee to drink for half an hour. I was not sure that I would be able to survive the abduction.

The question remains, who did it?

Grade 7 Multimedia Projects

This term in Social Studies we have focused on integrating multimedia projects to demonstrate student learning. In grade 7, students were given the opportunity to create “Travel Alberta-style" television commercials on a fur trade fort within the province.

Commercials were to present profiles of fur trade forts in Alberta to help tourists locate and learn about these remnants of Alberta’s history. This particular video exemplifies the four criteria students were expected to achieve in this project: location, history, interactions and a modern perspective of the fort.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank School Council, PFA and all the parents connected with preparing such a wonderful Staff Appreciation lunch for us today!

We seldom have opportunity to sit around and visit with each other while enjoying great food.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6th marked the twentieth anniversary of the murder of fourteen women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. Since that day, Canadians have marked this day as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This year, two grade nine students produced a video that deals with this topic. At a meeting of junior high students, this video was shown and students participated in an activity where they decorated white t-shirts.

I believe it is important to mark the anniversary of the massacre at Ecole Polytechnique with young people. We must pause to consider the immense toll that violence against women takes on our society and ask our students to do the same.

December 6th is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the strides we have made since 1989. In large part due to the Montreal Massacre, women shelters were opened across the country and domestic abuse became a topic that was no longer hidden from view. However, Canadian society still has far to go. Women and other marginalized groups continue to experience violence at alarming rates. The following video produced by Cassandra and Dominique is a perfect illustration of this fact. I would like to thank Cassie and Dominique for being leaders in this project; it is both professional and impactful.
